I'll be honest, I don't like GPS navigation systems. I'm a map person through & through. I love to study a map, absorb the alternative routes & remember it with my photographic memory. But while driving through the French alps, I couldn't help myself & set up the GPS purely so I can see the road ahead.
We have embarked on an epic road trip, heading north to the Arctic Circle to see the northern lights. While visiting one of the many rest stops along the way, I unfortunately got a little addicted to this rest stop delicassi, the bacon pølsa. A foot long pork sausage wrapped in bacon served in a warm bun.
The whole point of our trip to Norway in March, 2011 was to see the Northern Lights. After driving for eleven & a half hours to get to the Arctic Circle, this is what we saw. We spent eight minutes freezing our butts off looking at a street light & a lot of snow. The sky was spectacularly clear, but no lights.
Scandinavia is an expensive place to travel, especially for alcohol. But it can be cheaper. All it takes is a little local knowledge. On one of my trips to Norway we did as Norwegians do… Drive to another country to buy alcohol. It is cheaper to drive over to Sweden and back than it is to buy alcohol in Norway.
We have been driving across Norway and we are heading south toward Oslo, a long way from where we are. We cross yet another raging glacial river and we all say “WOW!”
I have a soft spot for road trips. I simply love driving. I find it soothing even. So when I get to drive on a section of asphalt that I have dreamed of since I have had a licence, the feeling I get is a good one.
